Where is The Soap Shack located?
We are a small business that makes all our products in a small soap studio on our farm in Lower Lake, CA.
Does The Soap Shack have a store location?
We currently only sell online.
How long will my soap last?
Our soaps usually stay ‘good’ for years. In fact, the older soap gets, the longer it lasts when you finally combine it with water in your shower or bath. Time does however affect the intensity of a soap’s fragrance. For the best fragrance, we recommend that you use and enjoy your soaps within six months of purchase. We do not use any preservatives in our soaps, so be sure to protect them from sunlight, water, and extreme heat when storing for later use.
What’s in your handmade soap?
Every bar is made with a different combination of essential oils, botanicals, and other nourishing ingredients. We DO NOT use palm oil. We use a huge array of oils like coconut oil, sweet almond oil, castor oil, rice bran oil, olive oil, shea butter, cocoa butter.
We also use ingredients like honey, ground herbs, micas, activated charcoal, coffee grounds, and goat’s milk from the dairy goats we raise on our farm.
Please check the ingredients of each individual bar for the specific list of ingredients.
Do you use Lye in your soap and is it Necessary?
Yes we use Lye. Lye is safe, and absolutely necessary when it comes to making soaps. To make soap, a chemical reaction between an oil (or oils, such as coconut oil, organic Shea butter, olive oil, and more) and lye must take place. This process is called saponification. Without lye, soap isn't soap, including even the most natural and handmade soaps, which we offer. Store soaps contain lye and finding this ingredient on the label can take some decoding. It may be listed as ingredients named "sodium palmate" or "saponified olive oil," which are the chemical names for mixing palm or olive oil with sodium hydroxide (lye).
During the saponification (soap curing) process, the lye and oils transform into soap and what was lye is no more.
What kind of fragrances do you use?
We use pure essential oils and Phthalate Free cosmetic grade fragrance oils.
What’s the size of your soap?
Our typical bar sizes are 3.75″ long by 2.25" wide and are .75″ thick, at 4.0 ounces each. Soap shrinks as it ages and cures, so you may experience a bar that weighs slightly less than 4 ounces.
How long does a bar of your soap typically last?
Most of our customers say a bar of our soap lasts them between 3-6 weeks. This is based on normal use. If you’re lathering up six different times because you’re enjoying the scent and experience, obviously a bar isn’t going to last that long! As the saying goes – your mileage may vary.
What should I do to make my soap last longer?
Let your soap dry out between uses by putting your soap on some kind of a soap dish that allows air to circulate around the bar. A ‘proper’ soap dish will either raise the bar up for air to circulate from beneath or contain air holes for drainage of water below the soap. If you store your soap in the little alcove built into most shower stalls and tub surrounds, the shower spray will continually soak your soap. Our handmade natural soaps will last longer if you take care of them!
Do you test on animals?
No we do not test on animals, ever.
Are The Soap Shack products “cruelty-free”?
Do you use any animal products in your soaps?
Yes some of our products have honey, beeswax, and goats milk, but not all of them. Please check the individual product for a list of ingredients.
What are “superfatted” soaps, and are yours superfatted?
Superfatting a soap means we put more oils in than lye so that we have extra oils available for your skin to take advantage of. Our soaps contain a lot of extra oils to leave your skin more moisturized and soft. This is why our soaps are so amazing for the skin!
How long does it take to Ship my Order?
We usually ship your order within 2 business days from when you submitted your purchase. Our business days are Monday through Friday, so if you place your order on Friday your order will be shipped out either on Friday, Monday, or Tuesday. Shipping takes between 2 to 5 days, depending on your location.
Is the plastic my soap is wrapped in really biodegradable?
We buy Biolefin™ 2.0; Biodegradable Polyolefin to individually wrap our soaps to ensure freshness.
Under typical circumstances, the process of bio-degradation begins approximately 18 months after application, but the process does not kick into high gear until the film is exposed to the light, wind, heat, and moisture, like the conditions found in a landfill.
FDA Approved for direct food contact.
A custom-formulated oxo-biodegradable polyolefin shrink film using Wells Plastics Reverte Technology (www.wellsplastics.com) creating a biodegradable film suitable for a wide range of applications.
